Rocky Mountaineer Train Routes

We offer two Rocky Mountaineer rail routes - the classically popular First Passage to the West and the slightly more niche but equally stunning Journey Through the Clouds. We also offer flexibility on whether you ride Eastbound or Westbound so as whether you do the cruise or rail elements of your tour of Alaska and Canada first. Call our Cruise Experts to see which dates this is available.

First Passage to the West - Vancouver to Banff/Lake Louise via Kamloops

Travel through the legendary Spiral Tunnels, cross the Continental Divide, and be inspired as you wind through mountain passes and dramatic canyons. Experience the only passenger rail service on this historic rail route by Rocky Mountaineer, celebrated for connecting Canada from East to West.

Journey Through the Clouds - Vancouver to Jasper via Kamloops

Travel through scenic valleys, the Coast Mountains range and the Fraser Canyon with its spectacular white-water rapids and dramatic landscape. You will follow the route of the Fraser River, home of British Columbia’s largest salmon run, pass by the Albreda Glacier and magnificent Pyramid Falls, and hopefully see wildlife on the way. The highlight of this route is majestic Mount Robson, the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies.

When Best To Go

The Rocky Mountaineer season is mid-April to mid-October but when paired with a cruise, the season is April to September. You will experience very distinct seasons with big variations in temperatures, wildlife and scenery depending on when you travel.

  • April-May - before the summer crowds arrive and with the last chill of winter still in the air, you will see snow-dusted mountains and ice-covered lakes
  • June-August - the peak summer months bring the longest days to experience each destination. The rainforests are lush and full with dry, warm weather
  • September-October - crisp mountain air and a rainbow of colours as the leaves begin to change and the salmon run moves inland from the sea to the lakes and creeks, bringing other animals down to feast
