Cruise ships offer a wide variety of on-board entertainment. Large resort-like vessels will have an assortment of shows in the evenings including live comedy, cabaret and music.
Evening entertainment on board ship ranges from Broadway style theatre shows to more relaxed informal musical entertainment and is available throughout the ship.
The standards are continually being raised as bigger and better ships are launched each season featuring more groundbreaking shows and elaborate productions with LED screens and special effects. Check out Royal Caribbean’s Quantum of the Seas Two70 with it’s robotics and 360 degree video projection or P&O Cruises’ Britannia’s new Headline Theatre with LED backdrop and the most dynamic shows at sea.
Every cruise ship has a main show lounge where the headline entertainment usually takes place. These can range from spectacular Broadway-style shows featuring elaborate choreography, singing and dancing to comedians and more traditional theatre. There are also big name shows on some of the larger ships, with Norwegian Cruise Line currently offering ‘The Blue man group’ and Royal Caribbean with shows such as ‘Hairspray’and ‘Chicago’.
Cunard Line is also famous for it’s productions onboard Cunard Queen Elizabeth; the Queen Elizabeth theatre company is the only resident theatre company at sea with singers, dancers, actors and musicians performing well known plays and musicals, just like a London-based theatre company. The Queen Mary 2 also has entertainers from London's Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), one of the most famous acting schools, performing special versions of plays and literary classics on transatlantic cruises.
Smaller ships may offer a more refined experience with a pianist playing old favourites in the lounge or dancing with a live band in the ballroom and there is often a nightclub where guests can enjoy drinks and dancing late into the night.
Guests may also choose to play some games of chance at the casino or just relax with a bucket of popcorn at the cinema. Check out Princess Cruises ‘Movies under the stars’; a 300-square foot poolside movie-theatre screening Hollywood blockbusters on comfortable lounge chairs with cozy blankets surrounded by the sea and the sky.
