Costa Maya occupies a peninsula along Mexico's Caribbean coast about 100 miles south of Playa del Carmen. It’s a purpose-built port that opens the door to Mahahual and several ancient Mayan sites. These lesser-known Mayan ruins have not been as extensively excavated as some of their more famous counterparts, but they’re still spectacular. Close to the Belize border and almost consumed by the jungle, Kohunlich may provide your glimpse into this incredible civilisation. It encompasses wide lawns and ball courts, as well as higher structures like the Temple of the Masks with its sculpted faces.

Around 850 miles west of Portugal, the Azores are an archipelago of nine Portuguese-speaking islands scattered across the Atlantic waters, known for their dramatic and verdant landscapes. Portuguese navigators discovered the first of the Azores in 1432, although 2,000 Flemish settlers were among its early immigrants, and their influence can still be seen in the windmills that dot the landscape on some islands. Praia de Vitoria is located on Terceira, an island whose name means ‘third’ in reference to the order in which it was discovered.
