Like the UK, there are four distinct seasons in Japan, and although comfortable to travel in any season you will find that cruise lines choose to sail in Spring and Summer when the weather is more pleasant.
The most popular seasons for cruises around Japan are Spring, early Summer (May) and late Summer (August).
Spring, or Cherry Blossom season as it is known, has been celebrated for centuries and is Japan’s most loved season.
The Cherry Blossom trees (hanami locally) are in full bloom between late-March and April when the weather is mild and very pleasant, however, cruising at this time of year is limited so at Stewart Travel we would recommend booking early.
The best time to travel is May, with low rainfall, lush plantation and less crowded tourist attractions.
Travelling in June and July can offer mixed weather. Early June until mid-July is rainy season (tsuyu locally), although generally it doesn’t rain every day and the weather can simply be overcast, but this can vary greatly from year to year.
If choosing to cruise in summer, you would be best to wait until mid-July through until August when there is much less rainfall, temperatures are higher and the air is more humid.
