For years, Dubai has been an easy answer to the question: “Where’s guaranteed sunshine in Winter?” Warm weather, slick cruise terminals, luxury ships – it ticks a lot of boxes.
But lately, some travellers are pausing before booking. Not necessarily cancelling plans altogether, just… reconsidering. Wanting somewhere that feels a bit more straightforward, a bit more relaxed, or simply different.
If that sounds like you, the good news is you’ve got options – and not second-best ones either. In many cases, these alternatives end up being the trips people talk about for years afterwards.
Let’s look at a few.
If you type “Dubai cruise alternatives Winter” into Google, the Caribbean will come up again and again. And yes – it’s the obvious one. But it’s also considered as the safest bet.
There’s something reassuringly easy about Caribbean cruising:
Where Dubai can feel polished and fast-paced, the Caribbean leans into doing very little, very well. Beach days, slow lunches, a swim, back on board. Repeat.
For travellers who were drawn to Dubai for its Winter reliability and premium feel, the Caribbean gives you that – but with softer edges.
And if you’re travelling long-haul anyway, it’s hard to argue with that first glimpse of turquoise water after a grey UK departure.

Mexico isn’t always considered in the shortlist for UK cruise travellers seeking some Winter sun, which is a bit surprising. Because if you’re asking, “where to cruise instead of Dubai?”, it actually answers that question quite well – just in a different way.
Most itineraries along the Pacific coast (think Cabo, Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan) feel a little less polished than Dubai… but that’s part of the appeal.
You trade:
And then there’s the food in Mexico. Honestly, for some travellers, that alone tips the balance.
It’s still warm, still comfortable, still very much a “Winter sun” escape. Just with more personality – and fewer people doing exactly the same thing as you.
If long flights are putting you off, this is where the Canary Islands quietly win.
They don’t try to compete with Dubai or the Caribbean on tropical credentials – and they don’t need to.
What they offer instead is simplicity:
Cruising the Canaries feels a bit more grounded. Less about ticking off bucket-list ports, more about enjoying the rhythm of the trip.
It’s also one of those options people underestimate – until they do it. And then they go back.

Some travellers weren’t really choosing Dubai for Dubai. They were choosing it because it felt like a premium, slightly different Winter cruise – something a bit more special than the usual routes. If that’s you, it’s worth looking further afield.
Places like the Seychelles or Mauritius offer a similar sense of escape, but dialled up:
It’s less “city + cruise” and more total switch-off. The kind of trip where you lose track of what day it is (in a good way).

It depends on what you were really looking for in the first place.
If it were:
There’s no single “replacement” – just better fits depending on your priorities.
Winter cruises tend to look wide open… until they’re not.
The best itineraries, flight times, and cabins (especially suites) tend to disappear earlier than people expect – particularly around Christmas and February half term.
And when you’re looking at long-haul options like the Caribbean or Mexico, the logistics matter more than they might seem at first glance.
That’s usually where speaking to someone who lives and breathes cruise itineraries can help – not in a pushy way, just in making sure everything lines up properly from the start.
For many people, Dubai will still be the right trip at some point. But if you’re hesitating – even slightly – this Winter might be the perfect excuse to try somewhere else. Because whether it’s the Caribbean, Mexico, or somewhere a bit further out, you’re not really compromising… You’re just choosing a different kind of sunshine.
