Our First-Hand Experience – Viking Lofn

Overview

Viking Lofn was launched back in 2015, and since then, has become renowned for its immaculate Scandinavian look and welcomed calm atmosphere on board! Hosting around 930 guests, the ship has that perfect balance of feeling spacious, yet intimate. Its primary goal is to provide guests with an experience that focuses on culture and local experience, instead of generic itineraries that rush from one place to the next.

What our Team thought...

“I loved my time on Viking. They are the oldest river cruise company, and through their partnerships and relationships with local authorities, they secure the prime number one docking positions, meaning they are closest to town, which is a big win for all Viking guests. They only use scheduled airlines, no low-cost carriers… these small differences are really appreciated while you’re there.”

Cabins

The cabins on board are designed to be simple, modern and practical. The majority come with private verandas and consist of beautiful light wood interiors. Throughout, you will find smart storage that makes even the smaller rooms feel that extra bit spacious. The highlight, however, is the beds. A real focus has been placed on comfort, and the quality lines emphasise this. For those searching for some extra space and a few added perks, the Suites offer the perfect option. There is also a selection of accessible cabins on board.

What our Team thought...

“We were in a standard outside cabin (high window), which was absolutely great. There were heated floors in the bathroom, a full glass shower cubicle, and the beds were nice and comfortable. The TV in the cabin had news, movies, etc., and all your Quietvox boxes and headsets, which you take daily to hear the guides, were provided along with chargers. You also receive water daily in your cabin. The cabin attendants were so lovely and always on hand for anything you might need.”

Dining

You can expect a dining experience that is relaxed and well thought out. The menus have been designed to highlight fresh, seasonal ingredients with a Nordic twist. What’s more, an open seating format allows you to eat when the time suits you – no need for strict dining hours. If you are seeking something extra special, there are fabulous speciality dining options available – a great option for any celebratory dinner!

What our Team thought...

“The food on board was great, with a daily selection available. If you wanted something different, you could ask, and they would help you out. From fresh French bread to French onion soup, we never went hungry! There were also themed options on certain nights, which was a lovely bonus.”

Onboard Spaces

The public areas on board have been beautifully designed for relaxation and opportunity to connect – both with other guests and the sea! Across the ship, you will find ample learning opportunities, with dedicated talks and workshops throughout. You’ll also find a stunning spa, sauna and wellness area, alongside a pool and open deck area for sunset views.

What our Team thought...

“The main place to be is the lounge. Here, we gathered with friends, and the main bar was located adjacent to us, with plenty of staff available. As the weather was a bit too cold, we didn’t use the top sun deck, but in Summer, you can also spend time outside there for some quiet relaxation. The space was lovely!”

Entertainment

If you desire breathtaking, flamboyant shows… then this isn’t the cruise for you. There has purposely been an emphasis made on low-key entertainment, in the form of live music, guest speakers and cultural presentations – helping you connect more with each destination on your journey and complementing your time ashore.

What our Team thought...

“Entertainment was low-key, in the best way possible. On 2 or 3 nights, they had a live band or local performers, which was good fun and created a great atmosphere, with everyone up dancing on board. Other nights were quieter, with music playing – perfect for relaxing and unwinding. We also mingled with other guests, which I would definitely encourage, as we met some amazing guests from the US who made the experience even better.”

Itineraries

Viking Lofn sails mainly through Northern Europe, the Baltic, and parts of North America. The purpose-built, smaller design allows for unique cruise itineraries, accessing ports that bigger ships simply cannot get to. Not only does this give a more personal feel, but it also allows the opportunity to experience more off-the-beaten-track destinations, creating a truly authentic cruise holiday.

What our Team thought...

“The itinerary was amazing – wine country galore! Every port was steeped in adventure, from the Pope’s Palace in Avignon to the Van Gogh story in Arles. The history behind the places you visit really reminds you of how interesting Europe was – and still is. We also spent 3 days in Lyon, which was lovely and picturesque. Many US guests were keen to visit as it’s famous for its wines. After doing this 1 week itinerary, I would highly recommend it in peak Summer when the weather is warmer.”

Service

The dedicated crew on board Viking Lofn are renowned for their incredible service. During your time on board, they will pick up on the smaller details like your favourite beverage and ensure that any needs are promptly met. It’s these fine details that make a Viking sailing stand out from the rest, as your trip feels both thoughtful and personal, without being overbearing.

What our Team thought...

“For me, the service was the standout feature of Viking. All the staff were super friendly and happy in their work, laughing and joining in with guests, which is great to see. This says a lot and shows that Viking clearly looks after them well. They get to see the world, but they also work extremely hard and long hours. I would recommend Viking for this reason alone – the entire team, from crew to directors on board, is amazing.”

Final Tips

Be sure to plan ahead, reserve and pack accordingly for the various on board lectures and opportunities ashore. These are what truly make the journey unlike any other and bring each destination to life.

What our Team thought...

“I would highly recommend trying a river cruise, particularly with Viking. The value for money, the destinations you get to visit and the staff… it is all outstanding. The highlights in every place you visit are fascinating and really give you that sense of history – a definite wow.”
